The definition, in one sentence
A QR code is a square image, made up of small black-and-white modules, that holds coded information — usually the address of a web page. When you point your phone's camera at it, the phone “reads” the pattern, translates it into text, and immediately offers you the matching action: open a website, connect to a WiFi network, add a contact, and so on.
The name “QR code” comes from Quick Response code. It was invented in 1994 in Japan by the company Denso Wave, originally to track car parts in automotive factories. The idea: a code that can be read instantly, from any direction, even when slightly damaged.
QR code vs barcode: what's the difference?
You already know the barcode: those vertical lines scanned at the supermarket checkout. A barcode stores information along a single line (its width). That's enough for a product number, but very limited.
The QR code, on the other hand, arranges information across two dimensions: width AND height. As a result, it holds far more data in a small space — up to several thousand characters — and reads from any angle, with no need to line it up precisely. It's a barcode “in 2D”, if you like.
What does a QR code actually look like?
If you look closely, a QR code is not a random pattern. Three large squares sit in three of its corners: these are markers that help the phone recognize the code and work out which way up it is. Between them, a mosaic of small dots (the “modules”) encodes the information itself.
A reassuring detail: a QR code includes “error correction”. Some of the dots act as a safety net, so the code stays readable even if it's partly dirty, creased or covered by a small logo in the middle. That's why you can often slip a brand logo into one without breaking it.
How does a scan work, step by step?
From the user's point of view, it all comes down to one gesture. But behind the scenes, four things happen in a fraction of a second:
- You open your phone's camera and point it at the QR code.
- The phone spots the three corner squares and “reads” the mosaic of dots.
- It translates those dots into information — for example a web address.
- It offers you the matching action: “Open the website”, “Join the WiFi network”, “Add the contact”… You confirm with a tap.
What can a QR code contain?
It's often associated with a web address, and that's by far the most common use. But a QR code can encode many other kinds of information. The most useful in everyday life:
- A website address (the classic case: opening a page).
- The credentials of a WiFi network (name + password) to connect without typing anything.
- A contact card (name, phone, email) that saves straight into the address book.
- A bank transfer instruction (amount and details pre-filled in the bank's app).
- A plain text, a phone number to call, or an email to write.
In every case, the principle stays the same: replacing a tedious bit of typing (entering a long address, copying a WiFi password, noting down an IBAN) with a single gesture.
What is it for day to day? Concrete examples
The QR code is not a gadget for techies. It solves very real little problems for shops, nonprofits, freelancers — and their customers:
- At a restaurant: a QR on the table opens the day's menu on the customer's phone, with no paper menu to reprint every time a price changes.
- In a holiday rental or a shop: a displayed QR connects visitors to the WiFi without dictating the password ten times a day.
- On a business card: a QR saves your details into the other person's phone in a single scan.
- In an estate agency window: a QR on the listing opens the property's full details, even when the shop is closed.
- For a nonprofit: a QR on a poster leads straight to the donation or membership page.
- On a product: a QR links to the manual, the product's origin, or a review form.
Static or dynamic QR: the distinction that changes everything
This is the only subtlety really worth understanding. There are two families of QR codes:
- The static QR encodes the information directly. The address is “engraved” in the pattern: if it changes, the QR stops working and you have to remake it. Perfect for information that will never move.
- The dynamic QR encodes an intermediate address you control. The square stays the same, but you can redirect to another page whenever you want. Bonus: you can then count how many times it has been scanned.
For an event poster printed only once, a static QR is enough. But as soon as the destination is likely to change — a menu, a promotion, a product page — the dynamic QR saves you from reprinting everything and lets you measure real usage.
Why is everyone talking about it?
The QR code has existed since 1994, but it long stayed under the radar in the West. Several factors tipped the balance:
- Smartphones read it natively: since there's no longer any app to install, scanning has become a reflex within everyone's reach.
- The pandemic popularized “contactless”: menus, tickets, certificates… the QR became the way to avoid handling shared objects.
- It bridges physical → digital: it's the simplest way to turn a real object (poster, packaging, shop window) into a gateway to a web page.
- It's free to generate and costs nothing to print: an unbeatable argument for small shops and nonprofits.
- QR code payment has become widespread in many countries, cementing the habit of scanning to take action.
Is it safe?
A QR code in itself is harmless: it's just an image containing text. The only risk lies in the destination: a malicious QR can lead to a fake site (a scam known as “quishing”, a blend of QR and phishing). The good habit is simple: before you confirm, look at the address your phone shows after the scan, just as you would for a link received by email. Be wary of QRs stuck over another one in public spaces.
